Veterinary Education is all about the students, and at every Vet Ed conference we've attended the whole experience was enhanced by the student volunteers. Vet Ed 2017 will be no exception and the Liverpool Vet Students pictured above have all volunteered to look after the presenters and delegates whilst at Liverpool.

Closing Address by Professor Gavin Brown

The closing address at Vet Ed 2017 will be delivered by Professor Gavin Brown BSc PhD.

Gavin joined the University of Liverpool in June 2015 as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education. In this role he supports the Vice-Chancellor in setting the academic direction of the University, provides strategic leadership and champions the enhancement of learning and teaching throughout the academic and student community.

Before joining the University of Liverpool, Gavin spent his academic career at Lancaster University in a number of senior roles. As Dean of Undergraduate Studies his focus was on enhancing the quality of learning and teaching, and included the delivery of a number of IT initiatives to underpin technology-enhanced learning and support the student experience. He also spent six years as Deputy Dean for the Faculty of Health and Medicine, leading on resource planning and the development of international partnerships.

Gavin has a first degree in chemistry and a PhD in connective tissue biochemistry. His research interests focus on the role of matrix molecules in a variety of disease processes including the development of osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, corneal eye disease and the metastatic spread of cancer.

Opening Address by Professor Susan Dawson

The opening address at Vet Ed 2017 will be delivered by Professor Susan Dawson BVMS PhD MRCVS.

Professor Susan Dawson is Head of the School of Veterinary Science at the University of Liverpool.  She qualified as a veterinary surgeon from Glasgow and spent several years in vet practice before joining the University of Liverpool in 1988.  Her research is in the area of infectious diseases with a focus on zoonotic infections and antimicrobial resistance in particular. 
 
Professor Dawson is currently a member of the Council and Senate of the University of Liverpool and is also a council member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.  She sits on Education Committee for RCVS and has been a panel member and chair of accreditation visits of veterinary schools on behalf of the Royal College.  Susan was a member of the Veterinary Products Committee (2002-2011), a scientific advisory committee to DEFRA and was also the veterinary advisor to the antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infections committee for the Department of Health.  Professor Dawson is currently President of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association.
 
Since taking on the role of Head of the School of Veterinary Science, Professor Dawson has led the introduction of a new curriculum to the BVSc programme and has managed a significant increase in student numbers onto the programme.
